St. Agnes junior Audrey Welsh auditioned for and was accepted as one of seven students in the Greater Houston area as a student of The Houston Grand Opera's Voice Studio.
Audrey is a three-year All State Choir member; awarded first chair soprano this past year, a two-year member of Triple Trio (the most elite choir at SAA), a member of the cast in the St. Agnes Fall and Spring Musicals and newly elected as co-president of The St. Agnes/Strake Jesuit Mixed Chorus.
Houston Grand Opera’s Bauer Family High School Voice Studio is a prestigious, year-long scholarship program for high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a professional singing career.
Each spring, up to eight students are selected from the greater Houston area to participate in the program. They receive weekly private voice lessons and vocal coaching from Houston Grand Opera staff, where they focus on building technique and repertoire. In addition, through multiple performance and scholarship opportunities, participants gain behind-the-scenes experience with a professional opera company by observing rehearsals, participating in master classes with world-class artists, and attending the full season of mainstage performances at HGO, including the Concert of Arias competition. Previous masterclass presenters have included: Jamie Barton, Patrick Carfizzi, Joyce DiDonato, Joseph Li, Ana Maria Martinez, Dr. Barbara Paver, Buck Ross, and Michael Sumuel.
Studio members receive valuable mentorship throughout the college application process. They also receive a stipend to be spent on travel to auditions, college application fees, pianists for auditions and other college application related expenses. HGO pays for professional video recordings of each singer in the fall, which can be used for pre-screenings at colleges and universities.
