Houston, TX – For
its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to
improve the school and community, St. Agnes Academy has been awarded a 2014
National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of
Student Councils (NASC). In addition,
Mr. Tommy Calais, Director of Student Activities and Student Council sponsor
was named the Eddie G.
Bull State Advisor of the Year by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC)
at their state convention in Arlington over the weekend.
“Congratulations to Mr. Calais on this very prestigious award,”
said Principal Deborah Whalen. “We are all so proud of the work he does with
our students. It is obvious that one of the reasons our Student Council was
given the Gold Council of Excellence Award is due in large part to his
dedication and creativity.”
One high school advisor and one middle school advisor is
named the TASC Eddie G. Bull State Advisor of the Year. Eddie G. Bull served
TASC for more than 30 years. Under his leadership, TASC grew to more than 1300
member schools and expanded services to Texas students and advisors. Applications
are scored by a TASC Board of Directors committee made up of the five
student officers and five elected advisor representatives.
Council President Caterina Nasr wrote the nominating application saying, “Mr. Calais
is the glue that holds our student council together, the magnet that draws in
the hundreds of girls who run and make up our council year after year, and the net
to catch each one of us there if we ever fall.”
Calais’ local, district, and statewide activities with Student Council include
programs such as Lunch with Leaders, Big Sis/Little Sis Week, serving as
district officer and workshop presenter, and garnering awards for Outstanding
Student Council, Sweepstakes, and Community Service. He holds a B.A. in History
from St. Joseph Seminary, M.A. in Theology from Universite Catholique de
Louvain, and an M.A. in Religious Studies from Katholieke Universiteit
Leuven, in addition to serving as Director of Student Activities and teaching theology.
