Houston, TX – The St. Agnes Academy Tiger Girls Dance Team, led by Julie Chilton and Christy Holecek, danced their way to numerous awards in the HTE Hill Country Regional Dance Championship in New Braunfels, Texas, on February 1. The 35 dancers of the team brought home two first place trophies for Military and Jazz routines. Remix Dance Company, the 14-member elite dance team, won two first place trophies for Jazz and Pom routines.
“The team truly impressed the judges with their outstanding performances,” said Coach Julie Chilton, “receiving a special Judge’s Award for Showmanship.”
Remix Dance Company also achieved a coveted Judge’s Award for Technique, signifying that all 14 members of the team demonstrated exemplary dance technique. In the solo competition, Emma Carlson, Sakura Gray and Brenna McKay made it to the finals with Brenna McKay garnering first place and Sakura Gray taking second place in the 9th-10th grade division. In the Duets category, Kaitlin Karcher and Brenna McKay won first place for their dance, Mirror. Kaitlin Karcher, Skyler Kelly, and Sarah Staerker kicked their way to the finals of the Miss High Kick event. Finally, the Tigers Girls dance team won the prestigious Team Sweepstakes Award, signifying a score of 85 or higher in at least three of their performances.
The Tiger Girls study and practice various levels of dance technique and styles while developing physical strength, flexibility, stamina, and coordination. They regularly perform at St. Agnes pep rallies, Strake Jesuit football games, St. Agnes and Strake Jesuit basketball games, local competitions, and Spring Show. Members must audition for the team and attend a summer training program. During the school year, they practice Monday through Thursday from 6:30-7:40 a.m.
